In the "olden" days the oligarchs left enough crumbs on the table that a middle class could pretend that working class problems were below them, and the working class could pretend that homelessness was never an option.
Once the rug was pulled out from under the working class and subsequently the middle class, the formerly pacified populace started to wake up.
If they hadn't been so greedy, they could've kept getting away with it.
