In order to get every letter to occupy the same space, a monospace font distorts the proportions of the alphabet as if it were reflected in a funhouse mirror. Narrow letters like i and r are forced to be artificially wide, and wide letters like m and w are squeezed into the space.
In a typeface that is all about balance and order, Magrì’s challenge was to mitigate the effects of this stretching and squashing.
