It’s true that Fit has minuscules, but they are definitely not minuscule

I can’t believe I didn’t do this sooner, but I drew a lowercase for Fit https://djr.com/notes/novembers-font-of-the-month-fit-u-lc

A reminder that tomorrow, Thursday October 17 at 7pm BST, I’ll be giving The Beatrice Warde Memorial Lecture at St Bride Foundation! If you’re nearby, I’d be happy to see you in London, and if you’re not, there is a livestream available. Plus your ticket supports a great cause!

Following its proportionally-spaced cousin, Forma DJR Mono embodies the cleanliness and precision of midcentury design, but tempers it with subtle imperfections that come from its origins in metal type.

Monospaced typography was shaped by typewriters and early digital displays, but Forma DJR Mono is not a distressed typewriter font nor is it a purely digital creation. It exists somewhere in-between.

In order to get every letter to occupy the same space, a monospace font distorts the proportions of the alphabet as if it were reflected in a funhouse mirror. Narrow letters like i and r are forced to be artificially wide, and wide letters like m and w are squeezed into the space.

In a typeface that is all about balance and order, Magrì’s challenge was to mitigate the effects of this stretching and squashing.

Love Forma DJR but hate all the kerning? Then Forma DJR Mono is for you!

Spearheaded by Ruggero Magrì, the typeface reconsiders my revival of Forma for use on a monospace grid.
