For mobile Linux, is it possible to bypass carrier restrictions by doing the following?

1. Change phone’s IMEI (PPP allows you to easily do this) to a phone that you have that’s approved by the vendor

2. Mask traffic via a VPN so your carrier doesn’t see that it’s not sending atypical traffic

Has anyone tried this? How did it go?
