Random thought: Domain registrar's should offer a service where you can nominate people to take over a domain if you let it expire for whatever reason. Once it expires, email the list of provided addresses, they get 30 days to claim (and start paying for) it, only then it gets released.
Would be great to have for community resources, and worth some extra cost.
