Fantastic post by Manu on what identity is and that we can't be identified in broad strokes.

@kev Loved the blog!

Also I love the simplicity of his site, I want to copy it because it seems like a good way to not think about anything and just post (a blog) no tags, no sections no nothing (not even a navigation bar), just freely write and post.

@kev It’s essential to distinguish between “Y shouldn’t matter” and “Y doesn’t matter”. This is the difference between — for example — being non-racist (“I don’t see race”) and being anti-racist (“I see and fight racism”).

It is relevant that the author is — to use his own description — a “white cis male”, because anyone who doesn’t have these default characteristics knows from experience that being a unique individual doesn’t protect us from being judged by a single aspect of our identity.

@kev @kate

Indeed. The post sounds uncomfortably close to the facile version of the argument that says that any descriptors are ‘labels’ and that therefore describing a person is to reduce them. And then to refuse to acknowledge the very descriptors that are used to promote and oppress one’s self and others. A neat rhetorical trick that can only be done safely from a secure position of privilege.

@kate @kev The value of individuals is neither ignored nor diminished by acknowledging the different experiences people have because of racism, misogyny, and ableism.
