@miffyhelen would you believe the technical explanation is actually slightly more complicated than that? Something about "octo" being Latin but "pus" being Greek, as I recall.

Signed - someone who has spent a more than typical amount of time finding out how to pluralise "platypus" (including checking with government agencies!)

But it's a fun word. 😋
