The Northern Irish Civil Service is currently hiring for a blacksmithing apprentice position. This country never stops entertaining me.

Almost tempted to apply, honestly.

@astronomerritt We have a blacksmith in the next town over. Aside from cursing about the price of metal, he seems like a happy and prosperous person.

However I will note that he first set up shop in our town in an obscure location and did not fare as well. Location, location, location.

@alan I love that you can casually say you have a blacksmith in the next town over, that's very cool :D

This being a civil service job, I expect location is much less of an issue - from the sounds of it, the blacksmithing takes place at various heritage locations in Northern Ireland.

@astronomerritt Our municipality covers three towns and a couple of hamlets. The town he's in openly embraces the arts and diversity. There's also a pottery studio and the surrounding area hosts many a painter, photographer, writer, etc.

A friend from that town characterized ours as "full of retired farmers", but really tourism dominates the visible part of what's here. We have some very fine restaurants and ironically there are many artists and writers here too (I manage membership for the county's arts association, so I know this as well as anyone).

@alan It honestly sounds like a lovely place to live. Would you recommend it?

@astronomerritt Absolutely! Choosing to live here was highly methodological and took us about a decade of poking around. I saw your question about places where fascist fiefdoms might emerge in a post-apocalyptic England. This place was chosen in part because it seemed the least likely. Also, we have 100MW of hydro power generation within 5km, and a functioning canal. Should modes of transit be knocked back by 200 years or so, we'll be a hub of trade. Nothing is guaranteed, but this place seemed like the one with the best chances.

@alan That's incredible, thanks for explaining! Perhaps I should move to Galway. I think that would be the closest Irish equivalent.
