"This may not sound shocking, but it is one of the most shocking parts of this coup: why would you shut down all the federal offices unless you're nihilists who've decided we don't need a government?"

@L1vY @taniel@journa.host Fine, then the individual states can swoop in and take them over, then continue business as usual — cutting the federal government out of the picture entirely, and making sure they don’t get one red cent.
It’s time for states to start saying “you can’t fire us, we quit”.

@Pineywoozle @L1vY Sure sounds like a financial windfall for the states. Time to put eminent domain to work!
=> More informations about this toot | More toots from gregly@retro.pizza
@gregly No actually the money is federal so tRump hoovers it up. The properties are sold to oligarchs who also make a profit. The states are left with citizens who have to pay more to get services. It’s beyond sick.
=> More informations about this toot | More toots from Pineywoozle@masto.ai
@Pineywoozle Oh yeah, I know — which is why I say the states should seize the properties outright, and cease providing any funds to the federal government. I mean, why not? After all, laws mean nothing now, right? Civil norms are out the window!
This is all unserious cynicism to deal with this insanity, of course. And any state that currently gets more in federal funds than they provide would be utterly screwed.

@GottaLaff They have been jonesing to sell off post offices for eons. That property is worth billions. Plus then to get our mail we have to pay Amazon exorbitant rates. State Capture of services is always a first step. (It’s called State Capture because private entities capture things normally run by the “State” ie federal government. The name always stops me for a sec.)

Who would want a private business that by design can never be profitable?
It’s the level-of-service to reach every person in the country. If Republicans can get rid of that, then it is no different than UPS (who also don’t want to own USPS).
=> More informations about this toot | More toots from Tengrain@mastodon.social
@Tengrain To destroy it if they can’t charge enough to make it profitable. To destroy mail in voting. Who would push killing off grannie with COVID so the Government wouldn’t have to pay SS and the work force would go back to the office earlier… It’s the GOP, they often have lots of reasons normal decent Americans would never even think of… It’s also specifically the oligarchs, strip a business of any assets, then dump it. I don’t know but I know it’s one of their goals.
=> More informations about this toot | More toots from Pineywoozle@masto.ai
@Tengrain to change the pension structure from within?… but honestly fucking up mail in voting durring the midterms while they solidify their hold on America would make it worth gold if it were me.

Sure,I agree with you that is a goal, but why would (for instance) Bezos care about that goal? With the obvious exception of Musk (who seems to be a fascist for fascism’s sake), I cannot imagine one of the billionaires making the case to their BODs to buy the thing.

@Tengrain Musk flushed plenty to destroy Twitter. His initial goal was to make it profitable.Thet was never the goal of his investors. He had big plans to sell the punters Doge coins then sell blue checkmarks for Doge coins, to make it have all kinds of other functions. Never underestimate guys who were born on third base who think they’re home run hitters. That worked well in that he damaged elections and his business but still came out on top (ish)

@Tengrain This quote from Wired reenforces how desperate he was for a tRump win. “WIRED reported extensively on the working conditions of door knockers for contractors for America PAC, including a group of canvassers in Michigan who were driven around in the back of a seatless U-Haul moving van and threatened to have their pay and lodging withheld if they did not hit their quotas for Blitz Canvassing, a subcontractor for Musk’s PAC.“

I’ll also add that Musk and the 4th Reich can destroy USPS without buying it, just as they are doing with the rest of the Federal government.
=> More informations about this toot | More toots from Tengrain@mastodon.social
@Tengrain Absolutely. Squeezing it for assets like the property, then any means to destroy it is fine. The only reason to buy it would be to get some degree of speed in its total destruction or to get money out of some ego driven idiot who thinks “they” can make it work. No where in any rational mind does this end with a functioning post office, that benefits Americans.

@phoenixgee @L1vY @RebeccaSolnit I was just writing about that, and the problem therein — that you need a critical mass of people to participate in that, enough that it cripples the IRS trying to handle the sheer volume of disobedience; otherwise you just get a bunch of people who are royally screwed as the IRS destroys their lives.

@phoenixgee @L1vY @RebeccaSolnit The other problem is that many people — heck, including myself until a dumb miscalculation this year — get refunds in April, they don’t owe more. The taxes have already been paid.
The only way to do a true tax protest would be for everyone to file a new W-4 specifying no taxes withheld, which is, well, hard enough that most people are gonna have a lot of second thoughts and misgiving while in the process of doing it.
=> More informations about this toot | More toots from gregly@retro.pizza
