~3 years into living in Chapel Hill, I'm still surprised that the cost of living here is higher than in SF.
On the + side, we now pay a mortgage instead of rent.

I fully recognize that it's apples & oranges (our house is 2X larger than the one we rented in SF, some expenses aren't necessary); I just found it interesting to realize that we still aren't saving as much money as we used to.

@thomrstrom The other thing to consider: the fundamentals of day-to-day life have gotten much more expensive in real terms. I had extended stopovers in the cheap parts of the Midwest to assist with family over the last 18 months. The prices in nominal terms are about on-par with Zürich, which makes me wince as a visitor, which means they have been unaffordable to locals. At this point, I’d attribute it to gouging from suppliers and some remnants of supply chain shock.

@neurovagrant Yeah, truth be told, suffering through fire season during lock-down was a huge impetus for us to relocate.

@thomrstrom Same; I moved back to Central Massachusetts, where I'm from.
Those queasy orange apocalypse skies for weeks at a time during lockdown were too freaky.
