I published a friend's very basic guide for gov't workers on how to use Signal for their personal messaging and why it's a good idea: https://a.wholelottanothing.org/a-guide-to-using-signal-for-government-workers/

The funny thing is the first person (that didn't work in digital security) that insisted we only use Signal to talk was my therapist when I first met her 5-6 years ago. I asked her why and she said she didn't want doctor/patient messages to ever be readable by health insurance companies at any point in the future. I obliged.

It's good to know years later, every message we've ever sent was end to end encrypted and not logged anywhere on anyone's servers.

What I also love about Signal is that under the hood, it's all the wants and wishes of PGP email from 30 years ago, but without all the difficult email client and lock/key handshakes required of PGP back in the day.

It just works smoothly like every other messaging app, but that one is the most safe. If you dig into it, you can get your checksums and keys and shit, but it doesn't expose it to every user in order to start adopting it.

I love nerdy stuff with good UX, and Signal has it.

@mathowie One of my biggest complaints towards Signal adoption though was when they dropped SMS support. I had friends and family who had been using it drop it when they could no longer message anyone but myself after that.

I found that change quite disappointing as well but I still use and promote #Signal as I think it is the overall best choice for getting most people onto an #e2e #messaging platform.

I've seen the arguments on various issues and don't dismiss them, I simply believe Signal is the best overall choice for the digitally connected community that I inhabit.

@mathowie I love how they let you reset your "share profile link" and the QR code so you could give it out at a conference or somewhere and then get home and reset it once everyone you wanted to connect with was added.

@mathowie I just wish that the years of extremely hinky behavior of the Signal owners didn't leave me with a profound distrust of it, and them.

@mathowie

Something as simple as appt confirmation via sms is often going through a third party vendor. And you can bet those 3rd party business to business service providers are data mining the shit out of the fact you are even going to an office. It’s not against HIPPA to make inferences

Imagine you had an appt with an oncologist. That software system provider is damn well selling your phone and or email with others to big pharm
