I just watched Zemekis’ Here and it is so much better than we’ve been told. I think the reviews were harsh because it challenges the idea of linear narrative and camera movement (there is none…almost…no spoilers). Sure, Hanks and Wright didn’t look 18 even with the cgi, but we’re supposed to suspend some disbelief whenever we watch a film.

The Fiancé said it wasn’t a Marvel film so it’s too hard for lots of Americans. Younger people (some/too many) don’t want to have to think when they watch. Then he shared that he read thar many younger people don’t like Forrest Gump…they think it is stupid. Now, I can get not liking it because it’s unbelievable (btw, I do like it), but stupid? And not caring about the relationships? Yikes.

(Illustrated nicely, I feel, by the fact that "Citizen Kane" failed to win the Academy Award, and not many people know what ho-hum melodrama nabbed it that year.)

@LeslieBurns A fair point, but I suppose it was the "lots" and "many" which caught my eye. And, yes, not the best example on my part I do admit.
I know a fair number of young filmmakers (late teens to early twenties) who are involved in new and interesting things in the world of cinema; which is probably what makes me more optimistic about the interest youth has in non-"Hollywood" movies overall.
My own data bias has its own skewing.

@LeslieBurns The existence of creators implies, to me, the existence of consumers: their peer groups, and they themselves who consumed before they became creators.
With this conversation distilling my thoughts further, I think that I disagree with the judgement on today's youth / generation as being a lesser audience.
Every movie and TV-watching age group has plenty of embarrassing hits and popular programs; we remember the minority of quality examples that were different.

@LeslieBurns FWIW: I have disliked “Forrest Gump” since it first came out on VHS. I feel that the writers got it backwards; Jenny should have been the focus with Gump weaved into and out of her story. Her character was so much more interesting than his! I wouldn't call the film stupid at all, but it was definitely (and deeply) flawed.
Also: there's no way that it was a better film than both “Pulp Fiction” and “The Shawshank Redemption”. It wasn't even close! But the Oscar went to…
