Really regretting not having sold more of the S&P500 index fund I hold. Unloaded some shortly after the US election, but I reckon there will be a big big drop on market open and it will not bounce back fast.

Update: well those reckons were wrong. Nonetheless. I think it is prudent to reduce exposure to US, and will do so slowly.

@stephen Don't underestimate the foolishness of the Line. I bet it bounces back a fair bit in the short term

Hmm … I didn’t dump US S&P 500 last week when I was doing my clear out of dodgy stocks.
I’m currently up 57.7% on that investment.
It might be very different on Monday after the open. We will find out.

@futuresprog I also had a great 2024 in the markets and have been steadily taking money out of equities into term deposits and bond funds. But still feeling over exposed for someone who is notionally retired.

@stephen @futuresprog yep. the tracker's looking ok and it does seem like doom is on the horizon. But what to do instead? Baked beans have an expiry date after all...

@Niall @futuresprog my thinking is spreading around short term cash, bonds, and other equity markets... eg ASX has some depth, is not subject to FIF tax, probably isn't going to get caught in the tariff war...

How’s your gardening @Niall ? You can have a steady diet of plums and feijoas at certain times of the year.
But seriously, diversifying like what @stephen suggests is wise. There might be some capital flight from the US and that could arrive in Au or NZ.

@futuresprog @stephen we can do a lot better off a garden than that :-P
Every time I actively invest I prove the rule that it's a mug's game. Thanks for the ideas but I'm trusting Simplicity's judgment over my own.

What I skipped in my brevity is that Simplicity does have some good bundles. Good choice!
ETF bundles on Sharesies are fairly good but as you say, a mug’s game. And don’t get me started on buying and selling single stocks!

Normally there’s a one day lag for lines going down in the US to when they go down here. I guess we get to be the first in the world?
