decided not to work this weekend so I'm installing a gaming fedora-based distro on an old computer I had lying around

it has an AMD GPU so things are going actually well so far

okay I lied a little — my USB wifi adapter has a driver.. somewhere on GitHub that I can compile from source? luckily I have an ethernet cable too

I got the mouse to pair with bluetooth on the live CD but it won't work on the actual system, and the keyboard just stopped accepting letter input (it worked a second ago — system updates are happening though)

Hurray! I got Solaar to work https://github.com/pwr-Solaar/Solaar — so I can use the Logitech Unifying Receiver instead of doing bluetooth (it's gonna be lower latency for gaming! wired would be best but... doesn't work)

First game I actually tried to launch was Bloons TD 6 from the Epic Games Stores with the Heroic Games Launcher? It found a Proton version from Steam and installed all the prereqs - game worked flawlessly!

Horizon Chase Turbo works flawlessly under Proton Experimental too :) (via Heroic Games Launcher). Copying/pasting an image to/from the clipboard takes several seconds though, still. Ahhhh, Linux.

@fasterthanlime like I can even play stuff like Diablo IV and FFXIV.

The ones that don’t work AT ALL tend to be the ones that use extremely invasive DRM

@fasterthanlime Proton/Wine are so good, especially if developers release demos/betas that the devs can use to ensure compatibility. For example, when BG3 came out, I played through it up until Act 3, where it became unplayable at the same region as it did for Windows users.

@fasterthanlime usually my fix for "Linux native steam game isn't working" is "reinstall in proton".

And it almost always works. Sometimes performance is better too.

(You can force this by uninstalling, changing compatibility to proton, then installing. It won't let you switch away from native while it's installed)

@fasterthanlime I can't say for sure why you have it but I do recommend you give it a look beyond the title. It's actually really good, and I don't know any other game quite like it. It's a minigame-oriented RPG with a classic board game aesthetic, about teenage girls in the 1920s investigating the secrets and skullduggery underlying their school and the surrounding town.
