US media has traditionally been far more clear-eyed about antidemocratic purges abroad

so here's an exercise in how a US correspondent might describe the events of the last week in Washington, were it occurring overseas

@clive I'm not sure a 'clear-eyed observer' would describe a '250-year-old tradition of the rule of law' in the USA

More like

"the regime has in recent decades (begun concurrently with the French communes of 1968) tentatively attempted an experiment with equal justice in the eyes of the law, known locally as "Civil Rights" or "Diversity and Equity".

Even in the 1960s and 1970s, the country was locked in one of another of a series of expensive and bloody undeclared wars.

Musk's strongmen today definitively declared that experiment over."

'It is almost certain that the turmoil of this key economic player will lead to local, and broader regional destabilsation. Politicians in neighbouring countries are already discussing how to deal with the fallout.

Many worry that a contagion effect for other countries within the sphere of US influence may see similar right-wing authoritatians, backed by dark money and forces close to Musk, emboldened to seek power in government.'

Superb rewrite of the obsequious headlines from the WaPo and the NYTimid. Gets the facts and tone exactly right. Thank you, because we'll never see this week's events written up that accurately in the lamestream media.

@clive This is the kind of politics often seen in small AsiaPacific nations over the last few decades. I don't know if you see any news from these countries in the US, but in Australia we do.

Some typical events would be:

government finds an excuse to put opposition leader in jail,

Military refuses to fire on citizens

Military overthrows government, then takes power itself,

Political leaders are assassinated,

Deposed leader flees to another country to avoid reprisals.

I'm waiting to see what the US military does - if at some point they draw a line against Trump's excesses. #uspol
