WEEKEND MODE: ACTIVATE!
Made myself a proper cold morning coffee beverage (yep that’s breve / half and half foam!). Time to enjoy it while I bang out a #Matrix server to host Retro Retreat!

Welp. I've spent two hours trying to install a Matrix homeserver. I've tried droplets. I've tried it manually. I've used Debian and Ubuntu. I've consulted multiple guides.
This, every time:
Job for matrix-synapse.service failed because the control process exited with error code.
See "systemctl status matrix-synapse.service" and "journalctl -xeu matrix-synapse.service" for details.

If someone who's used Linux for 7 years and has experience installing stuff like PeerTube servers and Mastodon instances can't figure this out, how can we expect others to take control of their privacy, and embrace decentralized platforms and stuff like Matrix?
Seriously frustrating.

Bright side: I'm handing the reigns to https://etke.cc/about/
Happy to let them manage it for me for a slightly increased cost, because I DO believe in (and enjoy) Matrix, damnit!

@killyourfm what guide are you using?

@JoeRess First, Digital Ocean's for the one-click which is so barebones it's laughable. Then I tried this one which seemed thorough: https://shape.host/resources/how-to-set-up-a-chat-server-using-matrix-synapse-and-element-on-debian-12
Then this one:
https://comfy.guide/server/matrix/
this error always comes up.

@killyourfm maybe try this?

@JoeRess Thanks! I think this guide just convinced me to use Etke.cc to manage it for me 🤣

@killyourfm @JoeRess holy shit, if a guide in Digital Ocean cannot handle it, you might as well give it up
this from a CS uni graduate who's been using linux distros for +15years

@killyourfm Greatly said! This is the most important point of open source imo. It has to be easy to use and to expand. Many devs unfortunately forget the "expand" part.
Hopefully it will be improved in the future.

@killyourfm I didn’t vote on your poll, but I personally find Matrix somewhat difficult as a user too. None of the clients seem up to the task of a comfortable onboarding experience except maybe element. I use it for a few communities, but I don’t spend much time in it because of the friction of signing on and verifying, etc.
I’m sorry you had to spin your wheels on the setup. I wish it was easier.

@brainofdane Yea, Matrix has its rough edges for sure. But I'm not going to regret trying since it's all a learning experience. There doesn't seem to be a better alternative though.
@Oregon_Pacifist suggested Revolt which looks fantastic, but there's no mobile app and I know that will be a dealbreaker for some people :(

@killyourfm I'm not sure if it fits what you have in mind, but have you had a look at Zulip? I kind of wish I had an excuse to try it out myself.

@killyourfm I unfortunately came to the conclusion a while back that the UX of Matrix is simply incapable of supporting mainstream users—including me!
Which is a shame, because I desperately want to recommend and use something other than Discord. 🤷🏻♂️

@killyourfm out of curiosity I looked up Matrix after convincing my friends to switch to Signal.
Just reading past the first couple things I concluded it was too complicated for me to consider even tinkering with during my limited spare time.

@poweredbylemonx YUP. And this is sadly what most people will conclude.

@killyourfm I had high hopes for Matrix but now I hate it. Are there no anti-spam programs for it?! Just use a listserv like nature intended. https://bookofadamz.com/the-most-intelligent-people-on-the-internet-use-this-instead-of-slack-teams-or-discord/
