We’ve talked for at least a decade about retiring in Mexico. Both to try to make our small nest egg last and because we both prefer the culture there. With the US sliding further into hell, yes, there’s an extra impetus. And yet…

It now feels like we have a responsibility to stay.

But a responsibility has to be expressed in action. We’re fairly healthy but my wife is 72. What do we do in these times that is grounded, humble, connected, and not some egotistical fantasy? That’s the discussion.

@alysonsee right. We’re both getting much more serious about maintaining the body and mind, learning what that actually entails. Because in the end game that’s our main asset or liability.

@alysonsee What has really frayed in the pandemic is our connection to the community of Buddhist oldsters we used to hang out with once or twice a week. Now some of these friends are losing mobility, losing health care, and having to leave homes they can no longer afford or manage. Many have very weak family ties, so there’s often no one there to catch their fall. Unless the slightly younger oldsters like ourselves rebuild and maintain these found-family connections.

@alysonsee we tend by disposition to live as two quasi-hermits, but it seems like building community is the thing that’s most needed now, and maybe the least stupid thing we could be doing.
