Toot

There has been a growing 10+ year trend here to adopt a vegan diet. Some people with health issues discovered that cutting out meat improved chronic conditions.

But apparently there is also a newer trend among a subset of these new vegans to start eating meat again because their health went into the toilet after a while.

Shockingly, there seems to be a level of individuality to health and diet, and one size does not fit all.

@Kierkegaanks we've been eating mostly vegetarian but we'll sometimes throw some meat into the mix occasionally.

We kinda just go with what sounds good to us that leans healthy-ish.

Last night we had pizza with spinach, fried eggplant and Greek olives. Pretty danged delicious 😋

@Kierkegaanks I ate meat as a child then went vegetarian at age 9 (long before it was acceptable let alone fashionable lol) until college. One day I felt like eating meat again so I slowly reintroduced a little of it into my diet. I'm sure my body was telling me what I needed each time.

I would wish for everyone to be able to focus enough on the sometimes subtle messages their bodies are telling them 👍

@3x10to8mps or at least listening to their bloodwork lol

I’m sure the average healthy person would do better if they ate more like poor mediterraneans did 50 years ago (ie smaller portions with less animalic protein than now without excluding it, and more vegetables and legumes in the same meal)

@Kierkegaanks

Many people adopt a plant based diet without learning what they actually need to eat or how to prepare the food. Many just follow fad subsets that are obviously unhealthy and lacking. Many don't understand the dedication it takes to break away from the "mainstream" diet delivered to them via the agribiz capture of government agencies.

@callmeray And this is not the case in a middle class navel gazing constant health monitoring demographic

@Kierkegaanks There has been a trend much earlier to exclude animal products for ethical reasons. These people,of which I am one, are much more mindful of the composition of their diet, and much less likely to start eating meat again. I haven't eaten meat for about 30 years. I've noticed a trend that people who become vegan or vegetarian for health benefits, then start eating meat again sometime later.I think there's a social dynamic behind it and a not very strong and stable reason that they had.

@plsik call me biased but i think you would if your health was spiralling and it wasn’t because of the simplistic assumptions literally every fucking cultust can’t stop spewing in order to think

@Kierkegaanks I'm never gonna say never, just in case. But my determination is that if my health deteriorates, I will look for any solution but I will not eat meat. It's similar to me challenging your resolve not to eat human flesh.

That's the difference. When there are problems, I can't say to myself, "But these animals don't suffer like that, I was wrong." But if it's my feelings, my health, I can always say "I was wrong, there is no benefit".

@Kierkegaanks Outside of the throw, you are the only debater who meat it (I assume) and even thought he might be biased. I mean that as an accolade.

In my country many senior doctors are able to tell a vegan that he is suicidal. Likewise they will downplay smoking or drinking alcohol if they themselves smoke or drink. It's understandable.

I can imagine a doctor in, say, a Hindu population saying to a patient with a banal common ailment "and couldn't it be because you eat meat?" 😃
