Reading about all the ICE raids in the US and militarised checkpoints people are being subjected to is soul-destroying. I've got immediate family within reasonable walking distance of the border and the sheer number of human rights violations that take place in daily life there is astounding. Realising that we thought it was bad a couple of decades ago is now surreal.

@AnneleiseHall Roughly 1/4 of the conterminous US was Mexican territory first. It was always galling to me that families who had lived in S AZ for generations were told to "assimilate or go home" by asshole migrants from back east.

I am about ten minutes from the edge of the continent and we've had exactly fuck-all in terms of federal excitement here to date, and I was up the interstate to Seattle within the last week and saw no changes en route, crossing state borders or at ports

@sarae I'm in touch with my stateside relatives and friends and yes, there are raids and checkpoints. Things are very different along la frontera compared to your vantage point, I assure you.
