@treleanor that soil looks fairly poor. Do you have success with anything else you've planted?

@anathema_device I used to grow parsley there successfully. But gifted the whole space to neighbour, gardening whizz. I use tiny corner. He seems to have added dirt but not soil to this section. I’ve been digging in veggie scraps, no improvement yet. I think next year I won’t bother. I have another patch, packed full of iris corms(?). I’m encouraging thyme around the edges.

@treleanor Digging in scraps will temporarily deplete the soil of nitrogen :(

If the soil/dirt is that bad, can I suggest you get a small compost bin like this:

https://www.bunnings.com.au/tumbleweed-150l-gedye-compost-bin_p3160036

And put that over that patch for a year or so, while you fill it with your scraps and any other compostable material you can get hold of (including paper etc). The worms will do the work for you, and since they're breaking stuff down first before they bury it, you won't damage the soil nutrient levels. You can add some Searles 5 in 1

https://www.bunnings.com.au/searles-25l-5-in-1-organic-fertiliser_p3010342

To help it break down faster as well. And then you can come back and try your herbs after that. You can move the bin to another place you want to improve :)

@anathema_device Great idea, and I used to have compost when I lived in a house. However, this is way beyond my capabilities. No car, can’t carry things anymore. Also, anything in the yard is liable to be either stolen, or bashed until unusable. The joys of public housing.

@treleanor I feared that might be the case. What about a kitchen worm farm? @ash has one and might be able to advise on the best one for size? Then you just pour the worm tea onto the soil

@anathema_device @ash No room. There’s really no square centimetre available. Also couldn’t put it in a laundry; individual units don’t have laundries. It really is a constrained life, but I’ve adapted. I love my unit and where I live, the location is central, buses right outside the door. My version of a 15 minute city.

@treleanor @ash Understood :)

Well, then, you don't have many options. If you can get someone to pick up a bag of organic fertilizer from time to time you could improve the soil that way. Maybe your neighbour might be nice and help you out :)
