Toot

[SOLVED] I stumbled upon the strangest Internet mystery. Looking for the origin of the phrase "a rising tide lifts all boats," Apple's search suggestion was… "a scrambled egg makes all happy"???

This phrase can't be found anywhere on the web. It's not part of that Wikipedia page, or anywhere in its edit history. No one has probably ever said this (why would they*). And yet it will be suggested by Apple if you just start searching for "a rising".

SOLVED! Andy Baio and Molly White simultaneously discovered it on WikiData, not Wikipedia.

An unscrambled mystery makes all happy.

@neven is the apple search suggestion AI generated? because if so it makes a ton of sense.

@masukomi @neven I’m on an iPhone 14 Pro, which doesn’t have any of the Apple intelligence junk and I still got it:

@Wavebeam @masukomi (I have Apple Intelligence turned off as well. But it's not advertised as being used for this anyway—I don't think that's the culprit)

@masukomi It's technically possible that it could be, but it’s unclear what gain there would be from that, or how it would result in this

@neven how bizarre. It reads like a poorly done translation.

@Drain That particular feature shows results from Apple's "Siri Knowledge" index, the closest thing they have to a search engine

@neven A rising tide has metaphorical implications.

A scrambled egg means they have never seen anyone send scrambled eggs back for being too ‘runny’.
