Now that #Signal is in the #GuardianProject #FDroid repo, I did a clean reinstall to switch to that version and noticed this while setting it up fresh for the first time in literal years. Some of the custom icon options are obviously aimed at obscuring the fact that you have Signal installed. Handy for those with abusive spouses, dissidents or travelers whose phones might get inspected, etc.

@gerowen I remember when Tails OS had a mode to instantly make your entire desktop look like Windows, in the case someone appeared behind you.

It hasn't had that feature for years, but it was fun while it lasted.

@gerowen you probably didn't even need to reinstall it, that app is AFAIK just the one from the website, and both that and the Play Store's use the same signing key ;)

@lucasmz Ah. I just figured the Google Play version may have been built with Play services and since I'm using CalyxOS, I figured that might be one reason it would take spells that notifications would be delayed.

@gerowen they are! both have proprietary blobs meant to interact with google play services. (which here instead communicate with microG)

it's possible, i've had my own issues with signal notifications... but not specific to Calyx AFAIK, just everyone, specially with calls?

@lucasmz Yeah my brother has an iPhone and occasionally has issues. Conversations.im is much more reliable in this, on Android at least, not sure about iPhone.
