Have you ever looked back on your life and realized that somebody in the past you thought was extremist was actually just better educated and more observant than you, and just didn't like what they saw in the world? I've got a guy that I would love to be able to track back down and talk to, but I'm about 2,500 miles away from the last place we met, and I have no idea how to even begin trying to track him down without it being weird.

An excellent video by @EposVox where he talks about #tech sovereignty, his journey in figuring out what works for him and his concerns for today's children. Definitely give it a listen.

Experimenting with running Breath of the Wild with Ryujinx on the Steam Deck and it runs at full speed, but seems to cap itself at 20fps most of the time. If I turn off the internal "Switch" VSync it hits 30fps and even exceeds it sometimes, but doesn't stay there consistently. So it seems that the Switch basically says if it can't hold 30, drop all the way to 20 but keep physics at full speed. Dropping below 20 seems to affect in-game physics. It runs great on the mini PC, just tinkering.

I just posted an audio book version of the "Simple Sabotage Field Manual", an old WW2 era guide on helping regular citizens in Europe resist with no special training, and with minimal risk to themselves. It was written by the "Office of Strategic Services", the organization that pre-dates the #CIA, and was de-classified in 2008.

I'm about to see if I can make money from #AI. I've made a low effort #YouTube video where I ran an AI model locally on my own hardware to read an e-book and generate a voiceover. I had to do some editing and trimming, but the bulk of the "work" of reading the book was done with AI in just a few minutes on my own hardware. Let's see if YouTube lets me keep monetization enabled on it, 😛

They need to tread very lightly here. Being overtly political is not a good look for a privacy company, especially when the party they praised has fought to undermine encryption and privacy protections in the past.

I had started the process of re-ripping and transcoding some of my favorite shows a month or two ago, but the PC I had at the time had an FX 8370 and it was just not up to doing #AV1. It was hours per episode to encode. However, now I have this little guy, so I decided to give it a shot. Should be able to knock the whole show out in a few hours. #Farscape was the first Bluray set I purchased when Netflix removed it and motivated me to start own media server.

So I don't use it, but I introduced my mom to #Bitwarden today after helping her with something and she had to reset a password "again" because she couldn't remember what it was. I had never used it, but like what I've heard and thought it might be a more user friendly option than something like KeePass. I was actually kinda impressed with how simple it was to get her up and going. Hopefully she sticks to using it.

Does anybody know if there's a special mount flag or something that can be enabled on exFAT to allow more or certain special characters in filenames? I helped my mom thru doing an export of her #Facebook data and it includes a file with quotation marks in the name, which is fine on Linux and ext4, but when I try putting the files on her NTFS drive, or on her exFAT external, it complains about the filename.

What I usually do is I'll rip an ISO of the DVD and then run Handbrake on that ISO to reduce unnecessary thrashing back and forth of the DVD drive. However, this thing encodes a full length movie in a fraction of the time it takes to rip the disc, so it may be faster to just run Handbrake on the DVD directly. If a disc looks particularly scratched I may still make an ISO because I'm not sure how much error checking Handbrake does, but I know Brasero will make sure checksums match and warn you.

Got another box of surplus #DVDs to rip. I hadn't ripped anything lately, especially since getting our new mini PC, so this was my first chance to compare #x265 to #AV1 encode on our Minisforum UM890 Pro with a Ryzen 9 8945HS. This thing absolutely rips. AV1 encodes of DVD quality content run at hundreds of fps, depending on the movie. When using Handbrake's best recommended settings and comparing to x265, AV1 goes faster, makes smaller files and looks just as good.

Now that #Signal is in the #GuardianProject #FDroid repo, I did a clean reinstall to switch to that version and noticed this while setting it up fresh for the first time in literal years. Some of the custom icon options are obviously aimed at obscuring the fact that you have Signal installed. Handy for those with abusive spouses, dissidents or travelers whose phones might get inspected, etc.

While in the library I took her back into the stacks and showed her the old school freight style elevator that they use to move things up and down that old section of the library. She was a little weirded out and nervous but was super excited after I made her get in the first time, 😛
