Doubts about Pixelfed https://rknight.me/blog/doubts-about-pixelfed/

In which I have some concerns about how Pixelfed is going, a follow up of sorts to @zicklepop's post (https://melkat.blog/p/pixelfed-disappointment/)

@robb sigh.

I'd been contemplating how to convert my website's gallery to fit in with the other posting mechanisms I've built into my site, rather than relying on PixelFed as I do now, and this kind of stuff might be the extra motivation I need to actually get that done.

@robb @zicklepop I’ve deleted mine last week. It’s a shame. 🙁

@robb @zicklepop To me, the conclusion from all this isn't that Dan is a terrible, terrible person, but that the BDFL model of OSS is inherently problematic for any project that grows beyond a small library with a tiny footprint.

I think folks would be a lot more comfortable if Pixelfed/Loops truly had some kind of panel or group of people with "veto" power to make sure Dan doesn't just go off the rails with no accountability. Otherwise…we've seen this movie before. 😕

@robb @zicklepop it's a real shame, but ok 100% not feeling good vibes about the whole thing.

@robb Matches a lot of my hesitancy. There is a definite atmosphere of "bro-ness" in some of the "founder" posts that is hard for me to stomach. High cringe.

@robb @zicklepop

I'm confident Pixelfed won't be the only photo gallery game in Feditown, but I was looking forward to giving it try.

Unfortunately I encountered a variety of Instagram import issues that seem like they should be a top priority in this moment:

@robb @zicklepop someone is finally seeing the "elephant in the room" 😔

You are not alone. I stopped using it last year for similar reasons.

@robb harumph I have very similar misgivings as a person from the outside looking into the fediverse as a consumer. I shot Dan CAD 100 through the kickstarter because I want to support this IG alternative. My biggest worry is that he burns out or goes off the rails and the project dies.

@robb

it's just JSON with the URLs to the files. Not an ideal export for anyone without technical knowledge.

Thanks for saying. I was wondering if I was missing something when I tried to export. Anything that doesn't let you export your materials immediately is a no-no for me. Currently, I'm only cross-posting there (thanks, Echofeed) so I doubt I'll ever post anything there first.

@robb yeeeeahh… i’m gunshy. i have an account but i haven’t posted and i’m over that particular format for photo sharing.

would love to see some kind of webring of individual’s galleries on their own sites or something as an alternative maybe? i have no skills, just the idea.

@robb @zicklepop I appreciate his work and his passion on the project. But when a personal project becomes this big, it's important for the product to have some sort of organization structure behind. Similarly to the direction Mastodon is taking.
