@knowprose I will bet the green stuff on the bread is dill, I know that's big in Nordic cuisine
The Swedish PM has a beer
The bread looks plain, not Scandinavian rye bread. Booooo
other than that I'm at a loss

Oh well, you're not missing anything, really! It's not as if IKEA has great cuisine. But it's well marketed. And is 'different' from what people abroad are used to, so they milk the 'swedish idea' ๐
Same with their products names; most are not real Swedish but are made up and sound Swedish, and are 'nice to pronounce' by people who don't know Swedish.

@knowprose @benroyce I'm betting there's seafood. Salmon and/or herring? That would explain the dill.
Probably potatoes or other root vegetables.

Perfect timing!
Only a few hours ago I repeated my call for Scotland to be part of the Nordic group of countries. We share much in common with them, and they are some of our nearest neighbours.
Your image perfectly encapsulates my idea of government done on an informal and small scale.

@fitheach
it's long been my assertion that scotland should stop talking about or even mentioning leaving the uk
simple and always just talk about rejoining the eu
after all, you didn't choose to leave the eu, you were ripped from it against your clearly articulated will, and you merely desire to return to where you belong

@benroyce
Scotland choosing independence and re-joining the EU are both decisions for the people of Scotland to take. It is my assertion that the latter will never happen without the former.

of course
but I'm not talking about legal accuracy, and your words are accurate
I'm just talking political framing, salesmanship. Accentuating the positive

@benroyce
Actually, it is extremely rare for countries to have a referendum to choose independence. The most common route to independence is for countries to declare independence (or act independent), and for a "substantial" number of other countries to accept that call.
This is roughly what happened with, for example, New Zealand. The last vestige of direct British control didn't end until 1986.

the way i've heard it it's something akin to spanish and italians, or portuguese and spanish, sort of understanding each other- and stubb is a swedish-speaking finn. so i think they'd get across rudimentary concepts, but not be able to engage in high level fast speech
but i think this was just a nice photo shoot, not a working session. or it could have been with interpreters and staff just out of the picture or in another room- apparently this is Frederksen's dinner table at her house

@benroyce @dougfir It might have been a friendly meal before or after a more formal meeting.
Now I want to know who took the photo. Was it a staff member or someone in the family? That would tell us a lot about the meal.

@dougfir @benroyce Swedish, Danish and Norwegian are similar enough for general conversation ("please pass the dill"), but Finnish is so unsimilar it's not even an Indo-European language, and if they get into the nitty-gritty of international policy they'll probably go with English. The Finnish head of state probably knows one of the Scandinavian languages as well.
I was wondering why Iceland isn't represented. Probably insisted they use Old Norse as their common language. ;-)
