The NSW government is reviewing country coach routes and timetables.

Public consultation is open until Friday 14 February 2025, with changes coming in 2026.

If you live in, or travel to, a town that's underserved, now is your chance to have your say.

Personally, I would want to see the slowest sections of the Sydney to Melbourne train line upgraded to be a 6 hour trip, as suggested by Philip Laird.

I would increase frequencies to be at least one service every 30 minutes.

And then I'd run half hourly coach services that connect with the train.

Here's an example of the types of changes the NSW government is proposing:

"New route Wednesday and Saturday, Yass Junction to Young, and Thursday and Sunday Young to Yass Junction, connecting with rail services to provide a faster, more direct service between Young and Sydney."

Having a new twice-weekly coach service to Yass Junction will be great for the people of Young.

But this proposal doesn't go nearly far enough.

Imagine a town like Young getting a half hourly coach connecting it to a half hourly faster train to Sydney and Melbourne.

That should be the next step.

@ajsadauskas.bsky.social I was just thinking about this yesterday. I think MEL-SYD is both one of the most frequent plane routes, and one of the most profitable. It'd be awesome to offer an alternative.

@michcampbell @ajsadauskas.bsky.social Definitely.

And I think the first step should be to upgrade the slowest sections and bring in tilt trains.

If we can get it to 6 hours, we should aim to increase it to a half hour frequency from 6am to 7pm, 7 days a week, followed by multiple overnight sleeper services. With half hourly connecting coaches meeting those trains.

I think that would be a game changer in terms of rail patronage, as well as for cities like Albury–Wodonga and Wagga.

That would build out the demand that would justify an incremental upgrade to HSR.

@ajsadauskas @ajsadauskas.bsky.social yep, a comfortable train with wi-fi that takes 6 hrs CBD-CBD would make it so competitive with flying. None of the security theatre, being able to work comfortably, It'd be a no-brainer.

Agree, but think overnight with accommodation included is an opportunity.

Get on 6pm wake up in another city 6am.

Wifi, dining car and private bed/workspace would be a huge improvement on airport ques, transfers and flight mode time.

@LukeTheDrifter @michcampbell @ajsadauskas Last time I took a sleeper from Melbourne to Adelaide in the 80s, a porter brought breakfast on a tray while I was still in my bunk. Pot of tea, cereal, toast and apricot jam. Lovely! Should be more of it.
