Big day here as we've hit one month of #ArtEveryDay. I didn't think I'd last this long, but it's been really great fun, and hasn't felt like a chore at all. I think I may even be improving? Slightly. A small selection of recent attempts

The #PaperClub pick this fortnight is a recent-ish one from Columbu et al. - interesting use of a speleothem hydroclimate record to contextualise the decline of Neanderthals in Italy. Early days yet, and I'm no hominin expert, but I was just struck by how recently Neanderthals became extinct - only ~42 ka! Imagine the world if they had managed to survive...

I keep trying to tell my new German friends that Australia is very safe, and the dangerous animals aren't a worry, but since I've been here a friend's mum got bitten by a shark (they're fine), and my mum just sent me this photo of an Eastern Brown snake attending sewing class (bravo to them for trying, hard to sew without hands).

Great #PostDoc opportunity at #UNSW - the successful applicant will use climate model simulations to investigate the climate processes that lead to relationships between climate state, rainfall intensity, and groundwater recharge.

Winter germs finally caught up with me. I've been laying low since Saturday, and I've reached the point of well enough to be very sick of being at home, but not quite well enough to be sharing an office...

Cool new research out today in #Science from #MPIC colleagues - led by Dr. Tina Ludecke. Nitrogen and Carbon isotopes indicate that Australopithecus individuals were herbivores - meaning that meat consumption didn't predate brain development!

First MPIC Climate Geochemistry #ShutUpAndWrite today! Despite only two others attending, I still think it was a success. Hopefully we will continue to build momentum :)

Hey #Mainz-ers, reiterating that there is a large, sunny room available in a WG in a large house in Finthen :) the house features a cute courtyard, cellar, kitchen (and all the fixings, including dishwasher), large living room and balcony, laundry (including washing machine). Very convenient to MPIC/JGU/Hoschschule, by either bike or bus. 610/monat, all bills included.

Great to see Australia's under-funding of PhD candidates making the news. Australia pays PhD students - the engine of University research - an absolute pittance. If we don't raise the stipend to a livable rate, we risk losing a generation of researchers.

Hey brains trust, I am facilitating some #ShutUpAndWrite sessions at #MPIC for the next 6 weeks. We are doing 2 hour sessions. I'm planning ten minutes of 'intention setting', 50 minutes of work, then a 10 minute break to chat, then 50 minutes work.

Any suggestions welcome. I've done pomodoros in the past, but found a lot of the group wouldwork through the five minute break.
