Toot

Written by Susannah Collins on 2025-01-27 at 08:16

I'm still getting my head around this Mastodon thing, (my last post was 2 years ago)...my millennial brain seems to only compute with Instagram and Facebook marketplace at best - but I'm keen to share my work here as it seems like a welcoming space.

I make things - mostly freehand machine embroidery pieces. I'm fascinated by lichen-like forms - nature's ability to hold and transform is humbling in these current times.

@susannahcollins These are absolutely fascinating, I don’t think I’ve ever heard of “freehand embroidery” (but I’m not very familiar with embroidery in general). So cool! 😎

@boby_biq thanks so much! Freehand machine embroidery is just a fancy way of saying that I use the sewing machine to essentially draw (there are special machine feet and adjustments on the machine for this)

The way to get a following on Mastodon is by using #hashtags.

Mastodon doesn't have an algorithm that feeds you new posts, so when people are interested in something, they have to look for it themselves.

They often do that by searching on #hashtags.

For example, in your case: art, embroidery, lichen, artist, Collins

@paulschoe @susannahcollins You can even follow hashtags like people, so you don't have to search. That's the way this post came into my timeline. https://fedi.tips/how-do-i-follow-hashtags-on-mastodon-and-the-fediverse/

@susannahcollins

Hi!

In case you haven't yet, check out what the unofficial Fediverse guide https://fedi.tips recommends in their Quick Startert (on the landing page) in bullets 4-6, i.e. the 6th one:

"4. Discover people to follow

  1. Follow some hashtags and follow some groups

  1. Use some tips to get your account and posts discovered more easily"

Good luck & enjoy!
