Pinker said this of Chomsky, and it perfectly sums up CS Ed (w/ Papert):
Linguistics is an eccentric field…because it was so polarized by a charismatic figure and his opponents that it didn’t proceed in the ordinary direction of making the theory more precise, more testable.

@shriramk I can't miss a chance to recommend the book "The Charisma Machine" which has a lot to say about the acolytes of Papert.

@bremner @shriramk Such a good book. I frequently get nasty remarks when I point it out to those who still insist something like the OLPC initiative was a good idea, despite all evidence to the contrary.

@gwozniak @bremner @shriramk one of our friends suggested that the OAPC (One Anteater Per Child) initiative would be equally effective.

@irene
Great, now I have FOMA, fear of missing anteater.

@irene @gwozniak @bremner @shriramk You want One Anteater Per Child, but it looks like we're getting One AI Per Child. I suspect they'd gain more from the anteaters.

This is too damn brilliant.

I've been recommending the book to everyone I can. Morgan Ames's work is one of my "holy trinity" along with Justin Reich's "Failure to Disrupt" and Audrey Watters's writings.

@bremner TBH, even better is Morgan Ames's "Hackers, Computers, and Cooperation: A Critical History of Logo and Constructionist Learning":

@shriramk Of course, Pinker himself is a charismatic, polarizing figure. And there are people who would level that charge at both you and I.

@plragde The word "so" is critical. There's a claim of degree and consequence that don't apply to either of us.

@shriramk Times I wish Dijkstra was as influential in CS Ed as Chomsky in linguistics.

@smurthys Meh, sort of. I think Dijkstra overrated his views on CS Ed also. I'm not sure replacing one cultish slavery with another would have done much good. (The problem is of course less often with the saints as much as with their acolytes. But Dijkstra's stringency was better taken in from a distance than made a central dogma.)

@shriramk
This reminds me of the ideological motivations of stellar ,and probably other payment systems, for serving the unbanked. In other words, that having a connection to a bank or a payment system will allow the financial development of the global south and reduce global poverty.

@shriramk I wonder if there are any fundamental problems with creationism because I am one of them.
