People like @fullyabstract have asked me in what way federation causes me problems. There's a thread at the bottom of which is this, and I don't even know what I'm missing. (Clicking on the link shows me NO replies or even a thread, just one message.)

Just learned about this recent case where a transgender person in Karnataka, India successfully challenged the Registrar to accommodate name and gender changes (not possible by prior law). Progress that I couldn't have imagined decades ago.

People wonder whether books have any power left at all in the modern world and I want to point out that Hillbilly Elegy was published only in 2016.

Pinker said this of Chomsky, and it perfectly sums up CS Ed (w/ Papert):
Linguistics is an eccentric field…because it was so polarized by a charismatic figure and his opponents that it didn’t proceed in the ordinary direction of making the theory more precise, more testable.

As if fitting papers into page limits doesn't already require enough LaTeX fuckery, TIL that acmart sigconf review mode takes away space from the paper, so if you forget to turn it on and only realize on submission day, you're in for a ride.

I'm guessing most people have forgotten or never knew that HL Mencken drew up a mock "revised constitution" that berated the power of an over-powerful monarchical president. It's worth reading right now. (But also worth remembering: it was written about FDR.)

This didn't much affect parts of Europe I usually go to, but it's striking in Italy how much tourist stock is apartments. It's almost hard to find a hotel! I don't mean Venice/Rome/Florence, but even 2nd/3rd-tier cities. Starting to viscerally see where the protests come from.

I have now read several news articles that mention that Trump is trying to figure out how to restore TikTok, and literally not a single one has pointed out that he STARTED this whole mess (unless I'm mis-remembering?). There was that whole "Oracle will buy TikTok" boondoggle? Not a whisper!

Saw a truck for a home repair company named NETZERO; by pure coincidence, the same day I was cleaning out an ANCIENT laptops that had software most people are too young to know: for 10 years there was a must-have software called NetZero — a "free dial-up ISP". Wild times.
