Besides the official releases, there is a hardened fork for Android, called Molly. And for desktops, laptops, there is the Rust based, TUI powered gurk-rs.

@h3artbl33d depending on how you feel about separating art from the artist (or a fork from the forker), the JW fork might be a bit icky, it's maintained by a quite open far-righter. he's even got a fork of Gab in his Github profile.

The big feature of Molly is the database encryption. They have removed obsolete code from Signal, the FOSS variant is completely free of closed source binblobs. And both variants have an optimized WebSockets implementation. Less battery drain than Signal over WS.

And if you wish so, could even further optimize it with UnifiedPush (mollysocket).

Molly is made by the GrapheneOS community (not GOS itself).

@h3artbl33d the people-in-my-street whatsapp group switched to signal today, about 30 people, instigated by someone in the group expressing concerns about the way meta is run.

it was spontaneous, non-techy, and took just a couple of hours. i was most pleasantly surprised.

(i have always held back on trying to convert like that, with concerns in my mind about social traction, convenience, etc. all non-issues)

I am so, so glad to read that! This momentum should be empowered by further increasing awareness.

I do concur that the influx is primarily caused by the changes (and further enshittification) at Meta. But hey, let them dig their own grave while we are collaborating towards a more private, secure and resilient future :flan_hacker:
