@joe ah, if only english booleans were the same length, things would line up more eadily

@joe Oddly, HyperCard had provisions for that, too, but I’m not sure any translators ever shipped: https://hypercard.org/Pantechnicon/HyperCard/Features/Translator.txt

I remember AppleScript on 漢字Talk:
もし「持ち物」が0ならば “持ち物がありません”をボタンリスト:{“OK”}、デフォルトボタン:“OK”で表示する 以上

@YOCKOW oh interesting, I didn’t know that any dialects besides the English one actually shipped
=> More informations about this toot | More toots from joe@f.duriansoftware.com
@joe @YOCKOW I could swear back in the day the French dialect shipped but a few years ago I dedicated some time to search for it and didn’t find any proof it actually happened. But it was pretty cool, AFAIK the only language actually used in the wild to support this.

@arroz @joe
Yeah, come to think of it, one of the intriguing things was that three-letter keyword "try" was translated into long Japanese "エラーにそなえて".
I think someone literally tried to make it a natural language.

@YOCKOW @arroz @joe This reminds me of localizing software that just made every UI element long enough for the longest of all translations. It really surprised me that “Cancel” in Japanese was even longer than German “Abbrechen”.
=> More informations about this toot | More toots from uliwitness@chaos.social
@arroz @joe @YOCKOW Yeah, I have a vague memory of AppleScript dialects for French and Japanese being available, at least on a developer CD, if not to the general public.
=> More informations about this toot | More toots from uliwitness@chaos.social
@uliwitness @arroz @joe @YOCKOW I can confirm this was indeed the case. On my 7100 running 7.5.5 in French, opening an AppleScript would have it displayed in French also. A very nice touch, but a bit of a problem when the documentation and examples in magazines were in English.

@arroz @joe @YOCKOW So going by the message from @onegeekarmy below, I think you might find it in one of the French System 7.x releases.

I just remembered that I have in my Vault of Antiquities™ a boxed HyperCard in French (MO556 F/A) that I got in a pile of stuff someone discarded last year.
The documents inside are all in French, including the language guide.
I don't have the heart to remove the shrink wrap but, considering I can't find any of this in digital form, I may have to, for the greater good.
Interesting point: it requires System 3.2 and up, and so predates System 7 by quite a bit.

@uliwitness @arroz @joe @YOCKOW
While this is HyperCard and not AppleScript, Apple made a strong effort to enable non-English speakers to develop in their native languages, from the very beginning.
=> More informations about this toot | More toots from onegeekarmy@mastodon.social
@onegeekarmy @arroz @joe @YOCKOW FWIW, the German language guide still has all the actual HyperTalk keywords in English. Just the prose in between explaining everything is German.
=> More informations about this toot | More toots from uliwitness@chaos.social
@onegeekarmy @arroz @joe @YOCKOW You could probably squeeze out the floppy disks by hand. Or I can look later if I can find the French version somewhere on the web to see if it contains a TRAN resource for French HyperTalk.
