Thanks to regenerative braking, Caltrain's fuel bill post-electrification is projected to be less than their last year of Diesel trains, despite running even more trains at higher speeds.

@chrisjrn ... which should not be a surprise to anybody who knows anything about modern electric traction.

@ratsnakegames AND YET.

@chrisjrn @ratsnakegames Guessing the public servants involved didn't want to have "yet another budget overrun" by including the exact regeneration figures in the budget until the real world figures were available.

@chrisjrn I doubt they done this for Caltrain (because the track already exists) but for things like the Elizabeth Line in London, the track slopes up into a station and down out of it for help reduce the energy needed for braking and acceleration

@andydavies Yeah, I've seen similar in Montreal (though only in newer stations there), but for a retrofit, regenerative braking is a great way to go about it.

@chrisjrn would you believe we’ve had this technology over a hundred years, and basically walked away from it 50 years ago?

@OGjester Yeah. Obviously in Caltrain's case, I blame San Mateo County for everything.
