Wellington #cycling was so busy today.

With most folks (myself excluded, I went back during the wind and rain instead) back to work it was bikes everywhere today and nearly 1800 past the Oriental bay counter before 6pm.

Epic!

How are others managing things?

I normally like to know what is going on but I want to preserve (what is left of) my sanity.

After the assassination I put some words on a filter, click to open, but I keep clicking to open.

I more recently trimmed who I follow to avoid those who post on "full noise", which helps a little, but I need to do more.

Anyone got a good long block list of words/tags to fully hide?

Or should I just find a cone of silence, get smart style?

UX matters.

A poorly designed UI sets folks up for massive debts:

'My entire year's wages': Mum's $47k debt for Working for Families https://www.rnz.co.nz/news/business/539458/my-entire-year-s-wages-mum-s-47k-debt-for-working-for-families

This seems to have been a checkbox when a clear, must select one of:

Would have solved the whole thing.

Also the fault of doing social welfare at IRD to save the blushes of the middle class who wouldn't dare to deal with WINZ...

So...

I go to take carrots from fridge. They fall out of bag.

Turn bag other way up, they fall out even more.

I have opened the bag at both ends!

An awesome, easy to understand explainer about the IRD privacy scandal.

Props to @metlstorm for working with RNZ on this.

The Taxpayers Union's Auckland Ratepayers' Alliance (See https://www.taxpayers.org.nz/ratepayers_alliance_launch ) continues to prey on the public's poor grasp of how expensive long term public, sea and vandalism resistant infrastructure is.

Now perhaps if councils could employ engineering staff in house, but the TPU scolds councils for paying professional salaries over 100k...

@graue A mode to only see non public replies if you follow them might make conversations more disjointed but could be a practical client side mitigation.

I wonder if anybody knows what CVE-2024-21427 was?

I'll give you a clue:

https://www.catalyst.net.nz/blog/samba-and-catalyst-make-active-directory-more-secure

In short, Samba developers are very, very careful folks who test every angle.

Often as we develop our AD DC we find gaps in the Microsoft implementation, and let them know.

Sadly this one took a while, but if you use Authentication Policies or Silos on Windows AD, it really is time to patch, it doesn't protect what you think it does.

I had the pleasure of meeting Jade as she gave her pitch for this crowdfunder at Cycle Wellington:

A motor assisted trailer for moving building supplies for building jobs around hilly Wellington https://www.rnz.co.nz/news/national/511145/repair-collective-getting-creative-with-transport-in-hilly-wellington

Aiming to prove that even building work doesn't need a van on site, against the theme that some things by definition need a car.

On a similar theme I recently met a disability support worker who takes on inner urburn clients by e-bike to avoid parking.
