98% of Costco shareholders voted against a proposal to end its DEI initiatives, “The fact that 98% of investors voted against the proposal shows that almost all investors are not buying what the anti-ESG and anti-DEI organizations are selling.” Jamie Dimon and JPMorgan did the same. There’s been lots of press about companies jumping to appease the Trump admin. It’s not everyone. Companies like Costco and JPMorgan will have access to more top talent.

@bretcarmichael I suspect the Apple shareholder vote on anti-DEI efforts will go similarly to this

@gedeonm I agree. The principles are core to Apple’s identity. Even from a cynical all-about-money perspective, doing a 180° would alienate lots of customers. Not the sort of thing people will forget either.

@bretcarmichael TLDR; "Trump is wrong about everything"?

That's not sarcasm, it's what I believe. When policies are 'designed' by scum, to appeal to the worst people in society, this is what happens.

@woo His policy platform will make life worse for most people. Voters will figure it out when their lives experiences stop aligning with what they’re being told it is.

@aethernaut @woo I don't have a specific prediction. He seems to be moving quickly and risks overplaying his hand though. Some are fine with cruelty as hyperbole, but when they see the reality, it could make them uncomfortable. I think massive deregulation will help the stock market, and it will help US tech companies operating in the EU. That benefit won't trickle down to middle and lower classes, but inflation will. The mid-terms could be ugly for him, if he's too successful.

@bretcarmichael Hmm, but they also say that some are also buckling under the pressure and at least partially cutting DEI programs, like McDonalds.

It'd be interesting to see a deeper analysis of why they chose to go that way. Maybe they calculated that currying favors with Trump is better for "their" ("them" doesn't include all employees of course) interests and are willing to push some people under the bus for that.

AFAIK Amazon's AWS does a lot of business with the government, hence Bezos bending the knee. I'd assume others who don't like regulations (eg. McDonalds) would also like to be pals with Musk's crew.

@csepp Trump’s Executive Order attempts to make some features of DEI illegal, so companies have to thread a need to maintain their programs and insulate themselves from lawsuits.

@bretcarmichael Ah. Yeah, that would explain it.

I wonder if anyone's going to be willing to work around it, similar to how some organizations would work around non-discrimination laws, like using a proxy attribute for race. Either way, orders like this should not even be followed in the first place.

Written by Bret Carmichael on 2025-01-24 at 22:20

@csepp I think Apple will work around it. Diversity and LGBTQ advocacy are core to its identify. Cook donated to Trump. I think it was a careful choice that it was from him, not Apple. Also, he's done nothing culture or policy-wise to suggest a change in course. I agree. It shouldn't be allowed. Trump’s pitch is that companies should be able to discriminate on religion and gender, but they should not be allowed diversity goals. Those positions are cannot coexist.
