A screenshot from Apple Weather on this iPad right now.

No alt text because I cropped it: it simply reads:

Edinburgh

4 ℃ | Feels like -15 ℃

I think I'm staying home today.

@cstross holy cow! Yes, stay indoors! I visited my brother up in Newcastle one winter and remember how frozen I was. I wore every stitch of clothing I could and was still cold. I think I'll stick to the Outback... dust storms are not so bad.

It's the kind of weather where you want to wear a safety helmet if you go out in it, rather than worry about your lower half.

@petealexharris @PabloMartini Yep. The main hazard isn't the rain, it's slates being blown off roofs 10 metres overhead.

@cstross We had a couple days of 0° F, and I can tell you, it’s no joke. When the hairs inside your nose start to freeze, it’s time to go inside.

@cstross I was not previously aware of the meteorological measurement known as the 'Misery Index'.

It's sort of neat, though.

Map: https://earth.nullschool.net/#current/wind/surface/level/overlay=misery_index/orthographic=-24.65,39.19,463/loc=-3.140,55.898

@cstross I was woken at 7am by a gust of wind whistling that built to a crescendo with a slate falling from the roof.

Sated for a while by the rocky sacrifice, the wind dropped, for a short while.

Heating is on, house still cold - I'm glad of the new double glazed windows!

@cstross A sound plan, especially as the implied wind speed is nigh-guaranteed to put precipitation right up one's nasal passages.

(Just out of a couple-three days of extreme cold warnings hereabouts; the text included the observation that it hasn't been this cold in several years, please take this seriously, and I kept wanting to go "yeah, yeah, I remember what cold is like" at the hypothetical meteorologist who wrote the warning. I imagine it hits very different when you DON'T remember.)

@graydon Luckily we're on the east side of the land mass and the incoming wind is from the west, so it's dropping a lot of the rain before it gets this far. However, we have slate roofs 10 metres up overlooking the pavement: hard hats are recommended!

@cstross I would recommend it.

There is a saying: There is no such thing as bad weather, just inappropriate clothing.

But as my friend @pozorvlak says:

"Sometimes the appropriate clothing is building".
