I suppose that's always the question with increasing mass tourism - is the spending being spread around to benefit everyone, or being concentrated while locals are annoyed by the numbers of visitors?

I laughed at the mention in that article of the following inconvenience:
"... the gigantic suitcases blocking my way on the shinkansen..."
What is it about tourists wanting to take cases the size of fridges on their travels??? I'm always tripping over them on high-speed trains in Europe, where there really isn't enough room for them. What on earth do people need that much space for?

@timrichards I saw a bloke at Gatwick wheeling around a suitcase almost as tall a as him (admittedly he was on the short side, but still). Boggled me, having spent 28 days schlepping around the UK with 6-10kg of carry-on baggage
