@mvexel D) Automatically are in the app from my grocery chain, so I can check at will if needed, so never bother manually collect bits of paper.

@mvexel with digital screen at checkout I check every item scanned on the spot, so no much need for them. Also transaction is digital so no man in the middle like it was until the 90's with the credit card rollers

@mvexel I used to never get them, but then there was a story about how grocery chains were having security do bag checks on customers because the push to self-checkouts was leading to so much more "shrinkage". So I figured I might as well get the piece of paper and shove it in my pocket, so if I ever get stopped I can end the interaction with less hassle.
Of course, being white and not particularly poor-looking I haven't had to show it yet. But I still feel safer this way.

@eldang I know that to be a thing in Europe, never seen that here but am not surprised. Apparently the economics of self checkout vs actually hiring people still work out in favor of the grocery chains even with their small profit margins.

@mvexel this was specifically a Canadian story, though I'd be surprised if the trend were all that different in the US. The background factors are similar except that US chain retailers are howling much louder about theft.
I have also seen some rumblings about supermarkets starting to shift back to human cashiers because enough gets stolen through self-checkout that the economics don't add up for them. But I haven't noticed that shift happening anywhere I use yet.

@mvexel
I'm the dork entering my receipts into home finance software, so receipts are very much sought and kept until they can be recorded.

@jcarlson absolutely not a bad idea or dorky if you ask me. Do you enter manually or do you have some automation going on?

@mvexel
I'm sure there's some way of automating it, but no, just manual entry. Thank goodness for a numpad with its own tab key.

@jcarlson yay for numpads

@mvexel @jcarlson I thought I could survive without a numpad on my new laptop, which is true -- I am surviving. I miss it, but not as much as I miss full-size up and down arrow keys.

@jcarlson @mvexel I'm still using an old copy of Quicken 2007 for this. It works pretty well.
