I know there are places much colder than this, but it was -18°C when I took the dogs out this morning. Our largest dog is okay with it. I have to be very careful with the two smaller ones because the cold hurts their paws.
I don't know what people who live in much colder places do when they have small dogs. I guess they must have dog boots or something.
I've ordered some leggings for our smallest pup, Luna, but of course they won't arrive until it's warmed up again (i.e. -9°C).

@bodhipaksa We are often out in the snow and the ice and the collie comes with us xc skiing. 'Mitts' that prevent snow and ice balling up between his pads make a great deal of difference.

@Wen It's really just our small dog that has the problem. One of her paws starts hurting and she can't walk. We've ordered leggings for her, but I thinkI'll check out the local pet shops and see if they have any boots, because the leggings won't arrive before the end of the cold snap.
We have a medium (20lb) dog that can have difficulties and sometimes refuses to go out, but it's the tiny one I worry about.

@bodhipaksa I can sympathise. I first came across the boots on huskies 30 years ago, and although our collies have always been working dogs (notionally tough) we have never regretted using them in the snow and ice. Our neighbours, farmers where current collie came from) now use them as well. He laughed at first and then I did when I saw his dugs equipped in the winter

@bodhipaksa I was reading that the brand of boots they use in the Idoterod race are reasonable and good. Don't recall the brand
