In a local beauty community group chat I learned that online selling of cosmetics as ''mall pullouts'' is currently a thing. But a brand reached out to the group chat admin and said that there was no such thing as ''mall pullouts'' and that these items were from store pilferage, meaning they are stolen goods. So it is better to buy cosmetics for less from transparent official store sales, rather than face the karma of buying stolen goods.

@pixiecata What do they mean by "mall pullouts"? Because in publishing lingo, that means the items were pulled out for (usually) product photoshoots. That makes those items quite unhygienic because chances are, they've already been opened.

@luthien1126 People sell on platforms like Facebook Marketplace and justify the low prices of items as "mall pullouts". Either supposedly close to expiry or did not pass quality check. But in my experience as a former retail manager, items that don't pass quality checks are disposed of so that the brand does not get negative publicity from unpleasant reactions to products.

@luthien1126 The photo posted in a group chat was a bulk sale of 80pcs assorted makeup for Php4000! Super suspicious!

@pixiecata Some of those are also acquired from dumpster diving for returns that are undamaged. Not sure if that's something you want to put on your face.

@elisse Returns policy for cosmetics here in the Philippines usually covers physical damage/molds/expiry/similar reasons and not change of mind, so I am sure returned cosmetics are not as prevalent here. But professional shoplifting is prevalent here, especially in cities like Baguio, where the Watsons drugstore allegedly reports the highest rate of shoplifted items among all its branches in the country.
