@TheGibson Ah great to see the printed magazine is still a thing. (I used to regularly read it. Always enjoyed most of the articles and of course the pictures of public telephones.)

@TheGibson Nice sentiment, but AP and AT are broken. This is massive, despite the breezy way its described here: https://socialhub.activitypub.rocks/t/web-based-protocol-handlers-for-activitypub-resources/3563

AP didn't define a protocol prefix (meaning web sites will avoid adding "Share With" buttons for fedi) and AT uses 'bsky.app' as a defacto protocol prefix, meaning they can block convenient access to any user.

AP's fix is pretty simple: Go back to the W3C peeps and say we need a small revision. But what I've read about the omission is that they just don't want to, and it seems to go along with their entrenched 'anti-viral features' attitude.

@thegibson @goldstein @2600 @OffTheHook @Rob_T_Firefly

I just worry that the "Killer app" of FB is the people and that while Mastodon and Bluesky did a great job at replacing xhitter... FaceBook is going to be a tougher nut to crack - while there is no tech in FB that truly can't be done by a clone - I've yet to see a FB clone attempt that actually pulls it together well enough to tempt most folks from there.

I know a lot of folks poohpooh facebook but I've found in my particular circles that when I meet someone new at a convention or renn faire etc.. I can most often say "hey are you on FB? ok find me under bla bla" and we can quicly connect and stay in touch - and that works far better than exchanging emails or so far better than "are you on Bsky or mastodon" etc...

I like Mastodon and bluesky well enough - but their nature is to be a digital town square .. FB and the friend system (which Friendica and Tribel and a few others do have but lack severely elsewhere) lets you construct a bubble - but in a good way - If I wnt to be out in the digital town sqaure I have those options but what FB gives and any valid replacement needs is : a place where you can post stuff only to those you have an existing agreement (friend) with - the 2 way handshake - request, accept, now friends lets you keep your interaction area pruned - you can post to friends only and if someone is a shitheel you can kick them out ... a "whitelist apporoach"

which I prefer to the "block as needed" approach of mastodon and bluesky - where anyone can see your stuff - even if you set to followers only since you don't need to approve followers (as far as I know - correct me if I'm wrong) the even slight amount of control/privacy just is not there / not the same.

However none of these are hugely difficult to solve

Friendica seems promising except the other features like groups and events are really not ready for primetime.

Tl:DR: We need something that will attract folks to leave FB.
