GOOD!

President Joe #Biden has pardoned Dr. Anthony Fauci, retired Gen. Mark Milley and members of the House committee that investigated the #Jan6 attack on the Capitol, using the extraordinary powers of his office in his final hours to guard against potential “revenge” by the incoming Trump administration. bit.ly/3E0CK1A

2/ Via Emptywheel:

Note: People who've gotten pardons don't have to file them until they need them. In other words, if Pam Bondi subpoenaed Adam Kinzinger, he could THEN hand over the pardon (though DOJ would have that paperwork).

Dr. #Fauci: "I have committed no crime ... The fact is, however, that the mere articulation of baseless threats, and the potential that they will be acted upon, create immeasurable and intolerable distress for me and my family … I acknowledge and appreciate the action that Pres. Biden has taken."

5/ Harry Dunn:

"I wish this pardon weren’t necessary, but unfortunately, the political climate we are in now has made the need for one somewhat of a reality. I, like all other public servants, was just doing my job and upholding my oath. I will always honor that”

Things pardons don't prevent:

Expensive legal harassment (in some ways it makes it easier)

Persecution

Prospective prosecution

Death threats

Regulatory harassment

Demonization

7/ Gen. Milley on his pardon: "My family and I are deeply grateful for the President's action today. After 43 years of faithful service in uniform to our Nation … I do not wish to spend whatever remaining time the Lord grants me fighting those who unjustly might seek retribution for perceived slights."

@GottaLaff My thoughts exactly. In fact, what DO they prevent in the face of people who think nothing of justice?

@Eetschrijver @GottaLaff if America was actually interested in addressing hate speech and the violence that erupts from it, then those who target people just doing their job would have been arrested & convicted by now. This is what the UK was able to do during the racist violence towards immigrants last year. There's no reason why America cannot step up to the plate & do the right thing. Except of course, for a wilful misunderstanding of what free speech actually means, & Trump.

@darthstar @GottaLaff You should feel confident that they are already targeting people. Trump may not be involved yet, but it's only a matter of time.

@GottaLaff

It is scary.

The fact that it is necessary to make this "pardon" to avoid revenge on baseless theories with justice as a tool "in case of" describe a democracy that is not working. I am sorry to tell that but this system has been corrupted.

IT ... IS ... SCARY.

@GottaLaff I recall very clearly that Anthony Fauci was about the only government official who decided to listen to ACT-UP about what was going on with AIDS and the lack of progress in treatment. For any gay or bisexual man at that time, this was unheard-of. But, further, he made ACT-UP part of the decision-making process regarding testing of new drugs and treatments. I don't know if this was "brave" of him or not, but the Republicans were all too happy to let gay and bi men exposed to HIV get sick and die with no treatment. He was the only one who showed true leadership both socially and scientifically.

He did it because it was the right thing and against a lot of pushback. He's a fucking saint. I distinctly remember the time, all of our community in San Francisco dying, nearly no one would so much as touch an ill gay man, you can't believe what it was like if you were not there.

@GottaLaff A shame for the country that Biden even had to do that. Loyal and committed people had to be protected from an overreaching, vengeful president.

@GottaLaff this alone will keep so many people silent and already has chased so many good people out of important roles - fear of this being them. Is there even a way back from this? Or are we now just divided and on the brink of domestic violence at any given moment, frozen in terror of a violent 31% of the country? Honestly, these are the questions that cause my own anxiety spirals.
