After all, anarchy worked for humans for the last 300,000 years or so. It wasn't until we got away from it that things got really bad. For almost that entire length of time, no countries, no governments, no boundaries, no police or armies. None. Yet humans survived and seemed to do fine.

When you are in the last part of your life, you start to wonder what things you maybe could do something about and what things are out of your control altogether. For younger people, say below 60 or so, the unfolding climate disaster is a huge threat along with pandemics. But even for those older than that, the climate disaster is here, now. As you become older, you have to pick your battles...where can you do the most (if any) good? I don't know but the more I look into it, the more I see that we humans are going to have to move toward direct democracy aka anarchy. Easy, right? No, but you have to start somewhere. As one person wrote, you have to keep moving toward anarchy, self-governance/direct democracy even if takes years, decades, centuries. But the way things are now is so destructive that I really don't see any other way.

Heather Cox Richardson, who is a very thoughtful writer and historian, nevertheless made me laugh when she wrote, "Trump is not as good at governing as he is at performance." 45 does not "govern" at all! He is a predator, a thief, an absconder. That's all he is. He didn't want to be president to "govern." He wants to steal and that's all he will do. In doing so, he will be eagerly abetted and aided by the Republican regime and its "Project 2025," an outline of how to steal from the "American" people.

What happened with William F. Buckley was this: I admired, when I was a teen, his erudite manner of speaking and his liveliness. I didn't really think a whole lot about what he was saying. But then, one day, I watched him on TV, he was on a panel discussion about evolution. (This was in the early 1970s.) He was on the side of "religious" people who didn't believe in evolution. It was so clear to me that he was making excuses for doubting evolution in such a cowering and weak manner that I was disgusted and totally lost all respect for him from that day on.

There is so much complaining and bitterness on here and it is justified. But what is lacking is any idea of how to get out of this circular system we have let build up. Why not abandon top-down government altogether and turn to direct democracy where people make their own decisions about how to deal with things rather than waiting for someone "higher-up" to tell them what to do? One place that does this is Umea, Sweden. They are so far away from the capitol, Stockholm, that they have ended up taking care of their own problems. Very good Guardian article about this city.

Many are saying we are voting to keep a "democracy." Yes, but what sort of "democracy" are we voting to keep? As some have reminded us, even the defeat of Trump does not mean the end of the fascist threat we all see much more clearly now. So, what to do? I say move towards direct democracy and away from competitive, "winners" and "losers" democracy. As long as any group feels they are not listened to, and thus not part of the rest of the population because they are "losers," fascism and charismatic fascist leaders will appeal to them.

J. Goebbels, Hitler's Minister of Propaganda in 1928: "The big joke on democracy is that it gives its mortal enemies the tools to its own destruction." But what sort of "democracy" is he speaking of? The type of democracy we have in the US is a military or competitive democracy--majority wins. It is this type of democracy with "winners" and "losers" that is always threatened by fascist takeover that will then cast it aside and grab full power. Direct democracy does away with all that. When things are done by consensus, there are no "sides," no parties or "left" or "right." Fascism cannot get a foothold because no ideology is involved. There is no power to grab.

It is not surprising, I guess, when "religious" people can't answer real questions about what they say they believe and then turn to attacking you, the person asking those questions. But it is always a bit disappointing. I have no "ideology" to sell anyone. I am in favor of anarchy or direct democracy, and this is non-ideological. Your "sincerely held beliefs" are merely your opinion and have nothing to do with me or with any of the very real problems we are facing as human beings. So, why do you get upset when, after posting your beliefs on a public forum, you are asked questions about what you say you believe? If you can't answer the questions, why can't you and why don't you ask yourself that?

Ben Rhodes: "...fundamentally, they're all the same: Putin, Netanyahu, Trump, Black Cube, etc. Obviously with differences in tactics and scale. But in the end, it's a bunch of corrupt people profiting off power in a system they've rigged to stay in power, which requires that they intimidate anyone who opposes them. Which is why you touch a nerve." Message to Alexey Navalny.

In thinking about direct democracy, or anarchy, it really is a bit frightening to think about how things would be without a government such as we live under now. But I cannot see why we need a government at all. Nor do I see why we need "countries" or nation-states as we have.

@samanthagroves I agree with a lot of what is being said to be the problem. But how do we get away from fascism, from "right" and "left?" I say direct democracy or anarchy. But this is to start down a long road. I am for protecting yourself from fascists, we have to do that. But I don't think violent revolution will make things any better, either. So, what to do? Again: Direct democracy, not the military-type or competitive democracy we have now. That is not working and never will.

It is because of living under a monstrous patriarchal system that controls all the weapons and money that our society ends up with monsters like Trump. He's a sociopathic maniac and should be utterly ignored and treated as such. Instead, we see him vying to return to one of the most powerful offices in the world. This is insane.
