One thing that never ceases to surprise me is when I find out by chance that I've been blocked by people I've never interacted with. I'm left to wonder about the motivation of the block.

I don't lose sleep over it, but if I've unwittingly offended someone, I like to know how, and possibly correct my behavior and/or make amends if at all possible. In these cases however such path is precluded, meaning that I can't improve myself*.

@oblomov
Do you ever block people you haven't interacted with?

@dillyd I actually block very very rarely. I think my block list is almost entirely composed of spammer (which are probably not even present anymore). It's more likely that, as @Dseitz mentions here https://mstdn.social/@Dseitz/113860353105359993, I ended up in some block list.

To add perspective, I do block/silence people I didn't interact with, simply to curate my feed.
Maybe they spam an otherwise interesting instance, or they are repetitive, aggressive or just ruin my personal experience in general.
Not having interacted in that case is actually a plus because I feel no investment in learning more or, honestly, help them improve.
Social media seems to imply you should hear everyone all the time, but sometimes it just feels better to say "no"...

@oblomov I block A LOT random people I see in the comments writing something I find very bad. I consider it a good way to keep my timeline clean.
And if someone blocked me they did me a favour, by saving me the time to block them 😉

@oblomov
There are a lot of overly aggressive block lists out there. If you didn't interact with them, it was probably nothing you did, just somebody being twitchy.

@oblomov how does one know they've been blocked? I thought the blocker stops seeing the blockee's posts and vice versa. i.e. there's no "you've been blocked" message.
Also, for those who block for noise reduction, don't forget there's a "mute" option. You can mute tags and set the mute to expire if you like. Handy for simply taking a break from certain topics or people.

@allpoints well, that's exactly how you find out you're blocked: you try to fetch a post from the blocker and you get a 403 error or similar. (Also if you go to the person's profile the Follow button is grayed out.) So this is mostly random: I see an account or post referenced by somebody else, try to fetch it and fail. Of course it might be not personal (e.g. instance-level block, either from their instance or by that user).

@oblomov learned something new. Thanks.
Good reminder I need to go through and take a look at who I'm following. I'm sure there's a bunch of folks I should be following back.
