Toot

Written by Chitchat 🎢🎻 on 2025-01-20 at 06:53

We have a grow cube in our community centre, for germinating seeds early. It doesn't seem to get used much.

Does anyone have any suggestions for seeds that could be germinated early in the season, that would either survive in a seed tray for several months, or be hardy enough to be planted out when there's still a risk of frosts/winter gales?

@Cyclist seeds to start now: Broad beans, sweet peas, onions, leeks

anything you can keep on growing on your windowsill (basil, chives)

@Hellybootwader

I start tomatoes now as well though the risk of damping off is higher than later. But for those that survive it does mean early toms - like end of May maybe

@JimmyB @Cyclist we have to wait so long before we can put the tomatoes out (central belt, Scotland) that we don’t start them for ages yet

@Hellybootwader @JimmyB

you grow tomatoes outdoors?

@Cyclist @JimmyB we put the tomatoes in the greenhouse, never get a good crop outside

@Hellybootwader @JimmyB ah. We're working on getting a community polytunnel. I'll wait til that's in place I think!

@Cyclist will you go for a polycrub?

Expensive but very high wind resistance - I would love the space for one at home or the funding for one at work (eventually, once we’ve got the water sorted)

@Hellybootwader they seem to be popular. We're right at the start of discussions. We need to find a site for it, and some funding before we make those decisions, but there are a number of polycrubs already on the island (and a few shredded standard polytunnels, too!) I'm hoping we would be able to go for either a polycrub or kederhouse

@Cyclist sounds good, good luck with getting it organised.

I’m sure either polycrub or order house would be great for the extra wind protection.

I like the idea of the sunken greenhouses too- in my infinite imaginary garden

@Cyclist

I grow toms somewhat successfully on a sunny window sill inside but they do make a bit of a mess. The things which helped were using the biggest pot I could fit in the space and being rigorous with feeding. Plus not letting them dry out. I know others do even better: mine were OK - but still straggly, etiolated beasts. But a fair crop so...

@JimmyB @Hellybootwader I tried that last year and got 3 underwhelming tomatoes from 2 plants πŸ˜‚. South east facing window and a cold wet summer didn't help, but I suspect it's a lost cause in this house

@Cyclist

Yes - I do. My most successful ones are outdoors. Massive seaweed mulch - and they take over the parish!

@JimmyB @Hellybootwader presumably somewhere very protected from the wind? I tried it here a couple of years ago, and it was a total failure, which I put down to the wind

@JimmyB @Hellybootwader I've just seen how far south you are. It would be a minor miracle if that worked in the Inner Hebrides πŸ˜‚

@Hellybootwader

I've got onions on the go. leeks too? Would you plant those out early, or keep them indoors until frost risk has gone?

@Cyclist I tend to put the leeks out in the pot for a while before moving them to their final position.

@Hellybootwader thanks..I tried broad beans early last year. They got too big to keep indoors, and got decimated by the gales. Currently working on better wind protection around the garden, but I think I'll wait and try early beans next year once the defences are better established!

@Cyclist I am amazed my outdoor autumn sown Broad beans are doing ok despite the winter winds (they are still very compact) hoping they will give an earlier crop than the batch started indoors
