My latest post is answering someone who is worried about what is happening and asks me what action they should take.

Here's my reply:

"But here it is. If you want to help people whose very existence is criminalized, you're likely to have to break laws. Laws that have consequences. It's either that, or yelling so loudly that you become a target. Possibly both."

@revoluciana If you’re loud about your values and become a target, that affects the depth of protection you can offer individually. eg an undocumented immigrant who needs shelter will be safer staying with someone who is low radar than someone who goes around shouting “fuck ICE! ¡Chinga la migra!” Both are important. But sometimes it’s not practical for the same person to do both

@chaspinrad absolutely. That's why I say "possibly."

There are plenty of times it can be both, but there are also plenty of circumstances where it can't.

@revoluciana What scares me is that I live with someone I think will be a target... who nevertheless is sure it won't happen to them because they're "too important". They've made it clear that our getting passports last year was a waste of time and money, because they'd clearly rather die than deal with the cognitive load of fleeing, even with an employer who's willing to support them.

How am I even supposed to deal with that kind of denial?
