Resharing an evergreen publication on #Alaska tourism, for AK Humanities Forum Magazine, because I learned last week that it's now available online in a more readable format.

"As a Denali local, I often find myself straddling a line between exaggerated disinterest in yet another distant caribou, and the unbridled enthusiasm of an unpaid tour guide because, despite their familiarity, caribou are undeniably amazing."

@rickirobin The "spend more time in a place" is something I've always done. However, I'd not made the connection between traditional extractive industries and industrial scale tourism. Now that you've pointed it out I can't unsee this obvious parallel.

@AlaskaWx I think so often about the infrastructure needed to get X number of people from point A to point B, & what they do when they get there, & what they take...& there's a permeable line between extraction & experience, & I don't always know where it is...but it's always unnerving to hear people suggest that tourism can be our post-transition economic replacement

@rickirobin Yes! I've shared my binoculars with that kid on the green bus so they could have that "holy crap, that's a bear!" moment, and you realize it's going to stay with them forever.
