In 2019 I made this when I couldn’t stop noticing the colors of subarctic winter aligning with this flag.

I am grateful to have trans people in my life and in the world.

Honored that ICT republished my commentary on #Denali; they do good work

Did some public thinking on #Denali and names in @alaskabeacon, because posting a photo of the mountain didn't feel right for me this time, but it does hit a little close to home.

The #Denali Borough often has a kind of ¯_(ツ)_/¯ approach to governing, but they have taken a stance on…you know.

Resharing an evergreen publication on #Alaska tourism, for AK Humanities Forum Magazine, because I learned last week that it's now available online in a more readable format.

"As a Denali local, I often find myself straddling a line between exaggerated disinterest in yet another distant caribou, and the unbridled enthusiasm of an unpaid tour guide because, despite their familiarity, caribou are undeniably amazing."

Left the bar in Healy at 11°, came home to McKinley village and it’s 43°. I hate it.

Yesterday, Dec. 9, 2024, marked the 100th anniversary of the designation of the land surrounding Wupatki Pueblo as a national monument. It is, of course, an arbitrary administrative marker in millennia of history, & I've appreciated how NPS has approached the centennial as a reflection rather than celebration.

As some followers know, I spent a month last winter solstice season as a writer in residence at #WupatkiNationalMonument. C & I stayed in the house where my family lived when I was a young kid, & it was a truly incredible opportunity to reconnect with this special place.

"the hive is changing, it's ok," I said. But it's the first time i really noticed it in mainstream local discourse (by "mainstream" I mean like 75 people lol). People are just not messing w FB anymore.

I'd just gotten off a webinar abt book culture in the trump era, & one point made was that corporate social media is just not enjoyable or addictive anymore, so it's easier for folks to stay off it (& maybe read a book, or check out completely).

But I don't know where the local hive goes now.

Some interesting thoughts swirling in our small goofy little neighborhood, as we've communicated abt a power outage & now intermittent cell service outage the last couple days.

There hasn't been the usual play by play flood of info/observations/inane speculation in FB groups, & some people are frustrated; why are people calling the utility & not sharing what they learn? Why are we reverting to insular group texts? A friend texted me, only 1/2 joking, bemoaning the loss of the hive mind (1/2)

My friend Emily Withnall, for #highcountrynews:

"When it took me an hour to plant just eight trees, I realized that taking 50 had been overly ambitious. I looked east across the mountainside, where charcoaled trees seemed to stretch out forever. Across the stream to the north, another mountainside appeared as an endless ripple of black trees...Who are we, I wondered, to pretend we can ever repair the harm we’ve caused?"

Morning ski, 10°F and dropping, slight north wind is biting enough to not mess around.

Snow has nice glide even in the grassy areas; was hoping for a bit more overnight, but it looks like this storm is moving on
