Not everyday there’s a 5.0 earthquake in the Bering Strait, but there was Sunday evening. Felt at Little Diomede. Concern there is for quake-induced rockslides, but so far so good. #Alaska #Earthquake

And the 16 teams that got serum from Nenana to north of Shaktoolik, so that there was something for Togo and Seppula to pick up.

Sea ice extent in the Bering Sea remains well below the 1991-2020 median and is the lowest for this point in the season since 2019. There's likely six to eight weeks to go before the seasonal max is reached, but given weather model forecast of prevailing south winds for the next ten days, ice is unlikely to reach the Pribilof Islands this year. #akwx #Arctic #SeaIce @Climatologist49 @ZLabe

So much happening weather and climate-wise around Alaska in January. Warmth, wind, no snow, lots of snow. Even some cold. And this is just what I could squeeze onto the graphic. #akwx #ExtremeWeather #Climate @Climatologist49

Sea ice extent in the Bering Sea in January was below the 46-year median in NSIDC data. Unlike autumn and spring, there is no significant trend in the Bering late winter ice extent. #akwx #SeaIce #Arctic @Climatologist49 @ZLabe

January temperature departures from the 1991-2020 baseline normal (ºF). As large as these departures are, it doesn't appear that any of the long term climate sites had a "top five" mildest January. Over mainland Alaska, for most places this was the mildest January since 2014 and/or 2016. For Southeast, January 2023 was generally milder. #akwx #Climate @Climatologist49 @pat_wx

Thanks for the responses. The collapse of the Soviet Union and it’s vassal states does not seem to apply to the US. Maybe the Spain is the closest analog?

Arctic-side sea ice extent as of January 30th was the second lowest for the date in the 47-year NSIDC satellite derived record, with only 2018 very slightly lower. The median extent has decreased about 10 percent since the early 1980s. @Climatologist49 @ZLabe

Yes indeed, of the four locations listed, Utqiaġvik has the greatest increase in January sunshine.

Anchorage: 2 hours 4 minutes

Fairbanks: 2 hours 50 minutes

Juneau: 1 hour 43 minutes

Utqiaġvik: 4 hours 5 minutes

But the greatest increase is along about 67.9ºN, where the first sunrise after solstice is January 2nd. The closest community to that latitude in Alaska is Arctic Village (68.1N), where January sunshine increases from none Jan 1-3 to 5 hours 48 minutes today.

Serious question: has any county, in the past 150 years, emerged from an authoritarian/oligarch government without a hot war?
