Anyone else here use AGS (Amiga Game Selector)? It's a distribution that works on various platforms (some emulated like Amiga Mini, Raspberry Pi, and some real hardware, upgraded or not like ECS, AGA and PiStorm).

It has games, demos, apps and it's really well put together, with care + love for the platform. There's a nice launcher with background music, categories, artwork and descriptions. You can exit to Workbench to use that too.

I'm asking because AFAIK, its primary means of distribution/discussion are a Facebook group and a discord. I would hope there to be some kind of community outside these platforms...

I like it because I can quickly get a sd card set up with a lot of software I want to check out, and I can also use the Shared: partition to put other things I have and quickly have access to them on the Amiga.

The developer's website has downloads available via torrent, cloud and mirrors, plus guides and other resources https://www.amigagameselector.co.uk/

@LiamGilmartin Yeah and I also saw they have an RSS feed, nice. Still, I think most discussion (feedback, questions, regular updates about what Paul Vince is doing for the upcoming release etc) happens on Facebook and Discord.

@LiamGilmartin @skylark13 I've only done some emulator stuff with Amiga in the last few years (been a long time since I had the hardware) but I've seen other devs use itch.io as a platform for downloads, and they also have forums, etc. not sure how well it works on actual hardware though.

@skylark13 I've used it on MISTer FPGA for a few years and it's great! I've also found the developer to be a little reclusive with news and updates. I figured it was just their way of staying under any copyright radar.

@zorrobandito I don't know if you're in the Facebook group, he was like that before but he's been pretty open about what he was doing during the development of 2.6 and the recently released 2.7. I don't know what changed. But he's still very terse and sometimes gruff in answering questions (understandable, most people don't even read the FAQ).

I'm using Facebook less and less, hopefully deleting my account soon, so I'm following less these days, but the release of 2.7 made me think about it...

@skylark13 I got off FB a few years ago (and nothing will tempt me back) but someone from the group, out at least related, was quite active on the MISTer forums and answered a couple of questions for me about creating a custom, cut down version.

@skylark13

I use #AmigaVision, which was formerly known as MegaAGS and could be "related" to AGS? It is semi-officially distributed as HD image (hdf) plus some adjacent files and has similar features to what you describe for AGS, all very polished. I currently use it on my #MiSTer and really like it!

Discussions happen on the MiSTer forums, eg https://misterfpga.org/viewtopic.php?t=8561

I feel your pain when it comes to communities locked into closed platforms.. 🙄

@hanno Thanks, interesting! There are definitely similarities in the launcher. I'll check it out!

They have a Mastodon presence too it seems - @amiga_vision
